Celebrate Dinner

howza! brian here. i figured since my name is listed over there on the left as a contributor, i should actually contribute something, so here goes.

following liz's "daily celebration" theme in a previous post, i'm going to declare a celebration today on dinner!

a couple of weeks ago, liz took the two oldest girls and the youngest girl to the movies leaving myself, maegann and jackson home to fend for ourselves. things went well throughout the day without any major mishaps when 5:30/6:00 rolls around and i decide i should go see about scrounging up some food for the kiddies and myself.

i came out of the office and stepped into the kitchen to see a table set with drinks, silverware, plates adorned with ham and cheese sammiches and even placemats to give the meal a little class.

i sat there staring at it for a minute trying to digest what was going on. the first thing i thought was "it couldn't be the boy cause, well, he's a typical boy and would sooner eat the scrapings off the floor than actually prepare something." i then briefly thought it might be maegann, but she's 4 yrs. old and hasn't exactly made a name for herself for being miss helper around the house.

my thoughts then wandered to the idea of sammich gnomes coming out from their daytime hiding places to make sammiches for us thinking we were like the poor shoe maker who was too incompetent to make a proper shoe (with me substituting the shoe maker as a haphazard dinner preparer)

even tho i liked the idea of sammich gnomes and didn't want to destroy the fantasy, the engineer in me won out and i had to get to the bottom of the mystery by employing my sherlock-like deductive reasoning skills.

first, i asked maegann "did you make dinner?!"

my detective skills paid off nicely when she responded with a proud "yup."

she then proceeded to tell me in great detail about how she prepared the meal including the choice of condiment to go with the dinner drink,

"a nice selection of filtered tap water seasoned to room temperature blends nicely with the tangy flavor of french's mustard sauce", or at least that's what i heard.

it was like my second youngest had, overnight, become some kind of sammich connoisseur. i, however, am working on a different theory. her detailed knowledge on the preparation of the dinner testifies to her involvement somehow, but i'm guessing she must have had help from the gnomes.

or maybe she is part gnome. either way, gnomes were definitely involved.

OK I am definitely going to read every blog post that brian writes because that was very entertaining. I just got a kick out of it! I read so many blogs written by women - who are generally more wordy than men. But to read such a funny story and so well written by a man - who are without a doubt usually a less wordy species - was quite fantastic. Bravo Brian! I loved the analogy of the shoemaker and the dinner preparer. And wether it is an elf or gnomes - she had help! Or maybe she has watched her mother and older siblings so much she figured she could do it too!

PS I have never know someone who could spell connoisseur correctly but yet not be able to correctly spell sandwich!? LOL

Seriously though I am a fan of your style in storytelling. I think you should be a regular poster on the family blog - at least once a month.

Thanks Brian. I NEVER pass along email stories but this one would really be right up there in comparison. Thanks for making me smile this morning. Keep writing great insights for us all!
